The past few days, the air has been reverberating with GanpatiBappaMorya. From welcoming Lord Ganesha into our homes to dancing in processions, to elaborate pooja preparations, an aura of auspiciousness is enveloping us all.
Lord Ganesha, our beloved Elephant-headed God, is revered for a multitude of qualities that are deeply symbolic and offer profound life lessons. His physical form and the objects he carries all represent specific virtues and characteristics. Inspired by Bappa, we recently launched a #BElikeBAPPA workshop, aimed to cultivate emotional wellbeing by embodying Ganpati's qualities. And so, I thought to pen down some inspiring qualities of Lord Ganesha, that make him stand out...
Remover of Obstacles (Vighnaharta): This is perhaps his most well-known attribute. He is widely worshipped at the beginning of any new venture, ceremony, or important task to seek his blessings for success and to remove any hurdles that may arise. The elephant, his form, clears a path through the jungle, just as Ganesha clears the path for his devotees.
How to embody: Don't let challenges paralyze you. Instead, face them head-on with perseverance and a problem-solving mindset. See obstacles not as hindrances, but as opportunities for growth.
Wisdom and Intellect: Bappa's large elephant head symbolizes immense wisdom, knowledge, and a discerning intellect. He is considered the patron of arts, sciences, and learning. The story of him transcribing the epic Mahabharata for the sage Vyasa, using his own broken tusk as a pen, highlights his intellectual prowess and dedication to knowledge.
How to embody: Be a lifelong learner - Embrace curiosity and never stop seeking knowledge. Read widely, listen to podcasts, take courses, and engage in thoughtful conversations. Ganesha's large head symbolizes a vast intellect, and you can fill yours with new information and ideas.
Sharp Focus and Concentration: Ganesha's small eyes, in contrast to his large head, represent the importance of a razor-sharp focus and attention to detail. This teaches one to concentrate on their goals and pursue them with determination.
How to embody: Actively practice single-tasking, dedicating your full attention to one duty at a time, and eliminating all distractions, both physical and digital..Train your mind to look beyond the superficial and see the core essence of a task, so as to make clearer decisions and pursue your objectives with a powerful sense of #purpose
Patience and Humility: His large belly is said to contain the entire cosmos, symbolizing his ability to peacefully absorb all of life's experiences, both good and bad. It also represents contentment and the capacity to digest and hold all knowledge without pride. His vehicle, the tiny mouse, symbolizes the ego, which is kept under control and humbled by the massive Ganesha.
How to embody: Just as Ganesha rides on a small mouse, learn to keep your ego (the mouse) in control. No matter how successful you become, stay grounded, humble, and respectful to everyone.
The Power of Listening: Ganesha's large ears signify the importance of listening intently and being open to new ideas. They also show his keen ability to hear the prayers of his devotees.
How to embody: In a world full of noise, true listening is a rare and powerful skill. When someone is speaking, give them your full attention, understand their perspective, and show them that they are heard.
Duty & Adaptability: The broken tusk, or Ekadanta ("one-tusked"), is a powerful symbol of taking on responsibility with a sense of duty. He broke his own tusk to use it as a pen to continue writing, showing that no obstacle, even a part of oneself, should get in the way of duty and the pursuit of knowledge. The trunk, which can perform both heavy and delicate tasks, also represents Ganesha's ability to be flexible and adaptable in any situation.
How to embody: Follow through any commitments and tasks you have undertaken. When faced with a new challenge, don't be rigid. Be flexible, think creatively, and find innovative solutions. Listen to your inner conscience
In essence, Lord Ganesha's qualities provide a spiritual roadmap for living a life of #purpose, intelligence, and grace. He teaches us to face challenges with courage, seek knowledge with an open mind, and maintain humility and balance in all circumstances.
Now is a great time for knowing oneself, being mindful of how one is living and pursuing goodness.
Which of Ganesha's Goodness can you see within you?
