Earlier this week, I published a reel, talking about the feeling of being permanently #exhausted and endless #fatigue, and the many reasons that could lead to this. These are called Energy Depleters, and can be varied.

"Energy depleters" are things—activities, habits, environments, people, or even thoughts—that drain your physical, mental, or emotional energy. In order to nip Exhaustion in the bud it is critical to identify the root cause i.e. what is depleting our energy.

Here are some of the common Energy Depleters...

1. Physical Energy Depleters

In today’s always-on, hustle way of living marked with overbusyness, and over-scheduling, taking time out to care for ourselves is a rarity. We seem to be always juggling things, be it office commitments, family priorities, or a thousand other chores. In a bid to “do more, be more”, we often end up compromising on the bare basics for happy living. When was the last time you cooked a high-nutrition, homemade-from-scratch meal? Or in a bid to be healthy, cooking home-made, hitting the gym, we may be getting on with “less sleep”.

·      Poor sleep: Inadequate or poor-quality sleep can leave us exhausted.

·      Lack of exercise: Physical inactivity can lower energy levels and mood.

·      Poor diet: High sugar, processed foods, and not enough nutrients drain energy.

·      Dehydration: Even mild dehydration can lead to fatigue.

·      Overworking: Not taking breaks or working long hours without rest can lead to burnout.

2. Mental Energy Depleters

Multiple stressors are arising from various external factors, instant gratification culture, comparison culture, macroeconomic conditions, socio-economic factors, and so on. These stressors have a direct impact, increasing our stress hormone, cortisol*1, triggering bodily changes as a way to cope with the stress. However when stress turns chronic, constant elevated levels of cortisol can lead to poor health, including feeling always exhausted.

·      Multitasking: Constant task-switching exhausts mental focus.

·      Information overload: Consuming too much news or content can overwhelm you.

·      Lack of purpose: Feeling directionless can sap motivation and mental energy.

·      Decision fatigue: Making too many decisions (especially trivial ones) wears down mental stamina.

3. Emotional Energy Depleters

Emotional exhaustion is a state of feeling emotionally worn-out and drained as a result of accumulated stress from your personal or work lives, or a combination of both. Emotional exhaustion is one of the signs of burnout*2. “Energy Vampires”, can be not only other people, but it can even be ourselves, due to our unfavourable habits or aspects of our personality! Are you a chronic overthinker, living constantly in your head, in a blur of unhealthy thoughts? Constant overthinking, catastrophizing, negative thinking, can deplete energy. Another factor, which we commonly see these days is the lack of purpose or meaning in one’s life – we seem to be comfortable, well-equipped, but not truly happy from within. Feeling a sense of loss of direction and life purpose aka Mojo, can make one feel always drained. Some other factors like…

·      Toxic relationships: People who are overly negative, critical, or demanding.

·      Unresolved conflict: Lingering arguments or emotional stress drain you over time.

·      Negative self-talk: Constant self-criticism or self-doubt undermines confidence and energy.

·      Suppressing emotions: Not expressing how you truly feel can lead to emotional exhaustion.

4. Environmental Energy Depleters

This can be actual physical environment, like our surroundings, or can be the overall sentiment. Economic crises, social unrest, negative news such as war, job losses, etc. are some of the triggers for energy depletion. It can also be closer to home, like unhealthy living conditions, or lack of open spaces.

·      Clutter: Disorganized spaces create a sense of chaos and drain focus.

·       Noise pollution: Constant background noise can increase stress and fatigue.

·       Concrete Jungles: Lack of green spaces and no access to greenery, thanks to our concrete jungles is a

·      Lack of sunlight: Natural light affects mood and energy through vitamin D and circadian rhythms.

5. Digital / Technological Energy Depleters

Advancing technology and social media access has made us so used to “instant gratification” culture, where we are always hooked on to the latest gadget consuming all sorts of content. In fact, much of digital content is so sensationalized, that we end up consuming negative content mindlessly, wasting our time and energy. The effects of increased screen-time are well-known – eye strain, sleep problems, difficulty concentrating, behavioural problems, and even negative body image*3 as we become more ingrained in a “comparison culture”. Some factors are…

·      Constant notifications: Frequent interruptions break focus and increase stress.

·      Social media overuse: Comparison, doomscrolling, or overstimulation drains emotional reserves.

·      Screen time before bed: Blue light interferes with melatonin and sleep quality.
